Reading Profile
Even though I love to read (I wouldn’t be studying library
science if I didn’t!), I currently don’t read for fun as often as I would like
to. After I graduate this summer, I am looking forward to getting back in the
habit of doing that more often! When reading for personal enjoyment, I tend to focus
much more on quality than quantity. By quality I just mean the book’s quality
and appeal to me personally. I am someone who tends to want to find the “perfect
book” for myself to read at that time, which limits the number of books I read
overall and has probably caused me to miss out on reading many great books. However,
when I was a kid I used to grab books from every shelf in the library and read
many different types of books without much concern for how much I was
ultimately going to like the specific book I had chosen. Starting this class
has made me think back to that time and has made me want to branch out more like
that again.
My
favorite fiction books of all time are the Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling and
the Silo series by Hugh Howey (the first book in that series, Wool, is my
favorite in the series). As far as fiction goes, I would say my favorite genre
is literary fiction. I also really like to read short stories. However, in
general, I tend to gravitate more toward non-fiction than fiction. I
particularly like biographies and books about history, as well as books about
religion and philosophy (I was a religious studies major in undergraduate and absolutely
loved all the reading I did for that degree!).
Excellent profile! When I was in grad school I also didn't get to read nearly as much for enjoyment as I would have liked. You'll be back to it soon enough - there is a light at the end of the tunnel!
ReplyDeleteI'm with you- looking forward to reading for the joy of reading after mid May and graduation! One thing I started making myself do years ago was to go to one section of the library where there were new books and staff picks and I had to pick one that wasn't a normal read for me and then I could pick the rest of my stack. I think it has helped me venture out of my comfort zone some. But I also tend to lean toward fiction over non fiction. However in my youth lit seminar we focused on non fiction and I enjoyed it.
